I expect my students to come to every lesson prepared, with their music folder (which I provide), a happy attitude and a heart that is open and teachable.  Students who are surly, rude and disrespectful will be dismissed to study elsewhere, and a student on the waiting list will be given the slot.  Any monies paid for lessons not taken up to that point will be cheerfully refunded.

Students will work on at least two songs a semester.  I expect students to wholeheartedly study the repertoire I assign.  This will be classical in nature.  If you are unwilling to study classical technique, please find another teacher.  Students will also be encouraged to work on a song of their choice.  I highly encourage students to sing contemporary music, however, I reserve the right to refuse a student's song choice. Songs that have profanity, drug references, and dark themes will never be allowed.  Screamo, hip hop, rap, reggae and a few emo songs will never be appropriate in this context, so please just choose something else.  Mostly I will refuse because the song is not a good fit for a student vocally just yet, and will work with the student to find something else.  We will keep the discarded song as a future goal, though!

At the first lesson of every semester, we will talk through your goals and objectives as vocalist and as a parent.  We will also decide at that point if your student is wanting to shoot for the goal of recording (December) or singing at recital in May (not required).  Once we list them out, I will be prepared weekly to focus my time and attention solely on your student to meet their goals and objectives. Lessons will consist of learning proper vocal technique and good habits and singing through the repertoire.  We will polish the student's stage presence and mic technique for recital if that is their goal. I will try to work in some ear training and sight singing training as well, but these will be emphasized less due to time constraints.  I am thrilled to help your student with their music from school or church as well.  When things come up like that, we will drop everything on our 'to do' list to prepare them for those wonderful opportunities!

I am respectful, positive and encouraging to the singers who study with me.  I love what I do!  However, you can expect me to be honest and intense with a student who is not reaching their potential by practicing or taking their voice seriously.  I am here to honor your time and financial investment and will work my hardest to see that your student is successful. I can only do so much, though.  The student is going to have to be responsible for their progress ultimately.   I will always be in communication with you via email, and will honestly assess your student's progress in the Lesson Notes email you will receive after EVERY lesson.  If you do not 'do email', please let me know.  I am always open to discussing any questions or concerns you might have in any format: text, email, by phone or in person.  Please do not hesitate to contact me.

We will have Winter Break and Spring Break as they are scheduled by the Woodland Park RE-2 school calendar.  Note that we DO have lessons on most bank holidays and Teacher Collaboration days. Snow days will be taken on a case by case basis.  I contact students/parents by phone or text when the school closes for snow days to clarify what to do.

Your lesson time has been reserved for you!  Students who do not consistently come to lessons have a much harder time progressing in their studies.  Try to keep cancellations to a minimum. Students who are very ill (vomiting, fever, strep throat, laryngitis) should stay home.  Students who simply have a little cold or sore throat can still benefit from a voice lesson.  If you did not practice, PLEASE COME AND WE WILL PRACTICE TOGETHER.  If you do need to cancel, please do so AT LEAST 24 hours in advance by contacting me via text message, email or phone, if possible.   If the cancellation is due to school events, please try to schedule your lesson at a time that won't conflict at the beginning of the semester.  I currently do not charge for cancellations that are made in a timely manner.

I reserve the right to cancel a lesson at any time and for any reason. Tuition will be credited back to your account for lessons I have to cancel.

Make up lessons will be scheduled as I have time, which is rare. Please let me know if you'd like for me to find a make up lesson time for you.

Students who fail to show up for a lesson without any explanation WILL be expected to pay for that lesson.  I reserve the right to terminate a student who does not show up for two or more lessons and give the slot to a singer on the waiting list. There are definitely students who would like to have your lesson time. Please try to be at your lesson as scheduled.

There is a non-refundable, annual $15.00 Library Fee, payable at the first lesson in September, which will help cover the costs of paper, toner, blank CD's (for those who need them), iTunes downloads of accompaniment tracks, and the purchase of more sheet music for the studio library.  I offer a lending library for any enrolled student who needs materials to take to their competitions, contests, auditions and rehearsals and their own enjoyment. Please borrow music! Your fee covers that. Students will also be encouraged to purchase their own music when appropriate in rare cases.

Normally, students prepare for one studio recording in December and one recital in mid-May at a Woodland Park location. I work with many singers who struggle with crippling stage fright, so rest assured that recitals are not required.  A $5.00 recital fee is required for all students who do participate. This fee helps offset the cost of the rental of the space.  There may also be an extra fee if I am able to hire a live accompanist to perform with your student.  This is not required, and the student can sing their piece(s) with the pre-recorded track that they will have used to practice with all semester.

Note to Parents: The beginning voice student should not be pressured by people to perform when they are not ready.  Singing can be an activity that is riddled with psychological minefields for many people.  I do what I can to keep the student relaxed and growing in confidence so that their physical mechanism is able to work freely without the constraints of their fears or 'hang-ups'. Sometimes this process can take a while.  I appreciate it when my student's families remaining constant in their support and encouragement!

I reserve the right to not allow a student to participate in the recital when they are not truly prepared.  I have had to tell many students over the years that they are not quite ready to perform their songs just yet.  My decision is in no way a personal slight against the student or their parents, but rather an attempt to preserve their reputation as a vocalist. Every time you take a stage, you are auditioning for future musical opportunities, especially in a town the size of Woodland Park.  We will often be hosting your student's music teacher in the audience.  I want every student to be totally prepared and at their very best for the audience when they take the stage at recital.  Thank you for your understanding.

The studio is blessed to operate with a constant waiting list.  Please register via the website to get your name in the hat for a slot in the studio.  YOU ARE UNDER NO OBLIGATION in any way if you register. It just gets you on the waiting list. Students are taken on a first come, first served basis from this list.  Be sure to mention the times and days that work best for you to have a lesson.  Thank you in advance for your patience as the wait can be rather long.

Parents will be required to sign off on songs I have assigned to their students within two weeks of them receiving it.  Songs cannot be changed by the parent's request after this point.  Parents, if you have strong opinions on this matter of song choice, PLEASE LISTEN TO YOUR STUDENT'S SONG as soon as they receive it to be sure it is suitable!  After the two week grace period, your student will begin learning the song in earnest and it cannot be changed, unless I decide otherwise.  Thank you for your cooperation.
Parents are welcome to sit in on any and all lessons they choose, as long as:
A) their student feels relaxed and comfortable with them being there and
B) the parent can listen and observe the lesson without comment and/or interference.
Every week your students sees me, you will receive an email lesson reminder and a follow up email with lesson notes.  Please read these carefully to keep up with important dates AND to follow your student's progress.  At the beginning of each semester, you, your student and myself will discuss what your goals are for them.  You can expect me to be attempting to meet those goals weekly.  If your student is not progressing, I will be telling you this in your weekly emails.  Please encourage them to practice and do what I am asking them to do in regards to their songs.  If you feel we need to change the goals and objectives for that semester, don't hesitate to let me know.   More than likely, you will receive an email with a glowing report about your singer!
Our lesson time goes very quickly and I book students back to back with no time in between. If you need to speak to me about something lesson related, please email me or call me instead of taking up valuable lesson time.  That being said, please know that I'm always happy to have parents in the studio!
It is important for parents to encourage their student to practice, but also to speak only words of encouragement to them about their voice.  I have seen parent's undo much of what the student and I have worked for weeks on by a single negative comment.  If a parent has any reservations about their student's progress, I would appreciate it if they talk to me privately via email or phone to remedy the situation.  I am always available for conversation about any questions or concerns you may have.  I will try diligently to return all phone calls within 24 hours.  Email contact will be answered sooner.  Texts will be answered immediately.  I am absolutely looking at this relationship as a team.  Let's work together to get this singer to succeed.

A summer session is usually offered one full day a week during specific weeks of my choosing.    I try to schedule, at minimum, six weeks of voice training over the summer for those students who would like to continue.  Lessons are $25.00 per half hour and $50.00 per hour. There are no other fees associated with this short summer session and no recital scheduled.

Phew! If you've read all the way to this point, I appreciate it! I'm grateful for the opportunity to serve you as a vocal coach.  I see it as a great privilege to work with singers, and I grow to respect and cherish my students as we journey together each and every year.  With three children of my own, I am well aware that voice lessons are indeed a luxury, and I acknowledge the time and sacrifice you are making as a family to participate in them.  I appreciate it so much!  Thank you. ~Christi Bovee
